Hello there, I would like to bring to the news desk’s attention an online children’s virtual world (game) named Bin Weevils. It is aimed at 6-11 year olds, and in the past few years I and other older players of the game have noticed the game’s content declining. The safety of the site is a lot more concerning though. We have reason to believe that Bin Weevils puts children as young as 6 in severe danger. The game proudly boasts a “kid safe” badge.
We have contacted the kid safe company on several occasions with regards safety and received no reply. The game allows children to sign up and play without needing an email or any other form of contact linked to the account. This means that any user can abuse innocent children on the site without having any form of identification apart from their IP address, which can easily be manipulated to seem like it’s not you through the use of a VPN. Section 1 – Bad chat filters One of the main features of the game is a chat filter, which is supposed to protect players from inappropriate content. It will block correctly spelt swear words from being visible to users, but apart from that, it doesn’t help at all. It can be easily manipulated by altering the spelling of the words to similar sounding terms that the filter approves of.
Below is a list of these that I have seen being used around the game, along with screenshot evidence to back it up. Pussy – pshy boobos – boobs foog – fuck iF lUCK – fuck sAIDS – aids hot – hut gaphy – gay CoUNT – cunt POpcoRN – porn “blue bird” is a term used instead of Twitter, so that users can give out personal information, and possibly be abused further on other platforms. Sit – shit beach – bitch As you can see, the green avatar in these screenshots went to the popular area, ‘Flum’s Fountain’ and repeatedly sent sexually explicit content. No moderator was on hand to ban the user, and they were free to run around saying whatever they wanted on a game aimed at 6-11 year olds. Although the site bans kids if the chat filter catches them, the ban can easily be bypassed using exploits or simply making a new account. There is pretty much no point in having a chat filter.
It is so easy manipulated that no child on Bin Weevils is safe. Section 2 – Bad moderation When I first joined Bin Weevils, I didn’t even know that reporting was possible. Unlike other children’s virtual worlds, there are no clear instructions on reporting players. Not that the reporting system helps, and I’m 99 percent sure that the team don’t even review reports.
Their website states that they employ live 24-hour moderators to keep the game in check. This is clearly not the case as their moderation / community team only consists of three people (they lost one moderator a few months ago) and inappropriate behaviour continuously rages on throughout the game, 24 hours a day.
When I have reported players in the past, I simply received an automated email from Bin Weevils telling me to put the user on my “ignore list.” Section 3 – Bullying A member of the Bin Weevils community has recently been continually targeted by online trolls operating in-game. Despite posting images of the harassment on Twitter, where the moderators have contact with players using their accounts, nothing has been done. These screenshots are just a fraction of the abuse he has received on this game. Using “skill” instead of kill to bypass the chat filter. Glows – loves / cook – cock skill – kill Section 3 – Consumerism Bin Weevils is riddled with advertisements, and there’s no escaping it. For their Bin Tycoon membership – and being accused for exhorting Bin Weevils younger players for Bin Tycoon Membership, which again proves that they may be modelling a bad example of not just advertising, but the chronic lack of attention to the younger players.
Whilst it is appreciated that Bin Weevils earn vital revenue from these advertisements, the pressure for extras for new players drifts the attention from the gameplay itself. Bin Weevils also features third party ads. Sponsored by brands such as Hasbro, Lego, Disney, Cartoon Network and more Hasbro. The ads are extremely prominent.
In the image above is a Bin Weevils area featuring four advertisements. One of many advertisements, linking to third party uncontrollable websites and demanding children to participate in the promotional area. Section 4 – Security Bin Weevils has been the victim of many cyber attacks. It is not a secure website at all. In 2014 and 2016, was closed down for several weeks while the team investigated the hackings. The game has also been DDoSed (proof: ).
In 2014 they suffered from a massive database leak, and many users had their account hacked and destroyed. This year they closed down due to a number of exploits in their game. Despite that, when a member of the gaming community contacted Bin Weevils as their account was hacked, they were greeted with this email: As you can see, they were extremely patronising and were covering up a very serious event. The hackers have also posted inappropriate content into the game. Hacking into the “magazines” feature, they changed the content of a virtual magazine called ‘Best Nest’ (in which it can be accessed by any player at any time) to abuse. They also exploited the in-game leaderboards, which showcased abusive content The game is easily exploited and has little to none security, the game has SWFs (Shockwave Flash files) available to all users simply by entering a URL (for example: ) and these SWFs can be editted in a SWF Decompiler and allows the user access to all of Bin Weevils coding, and they can modify it and then re-upload the SWF they exploited in-game, using a web debugging program such as ‘Fiddler 4’. Bin Weevils have also taken no steps to attempt to secure their APIs, which are also available on URLs (for example: ) and these are easily exploited using PHP scripts, as Bin Weevils salt has been leaked, pretty much allowing anybody to exploit these APIs and get unlimited ammounts of items, and in-game currency as well as experience, giving these players a massive advantage to everyone else.

Users can also gain ‘Bin Tycoon’ membership using web debugging programs like ‘Fiddler 4’ and ‘Charles’ which are supposed to be paid for, this gives a massive advantage too. I have contacted Bin Weevils myself and told them how to fix most of these issues, simply to be sent a ‘Thanks for your suggestions’ automated email. Chrome itself marks Bin Weevils as an unsafe website and we believe they do not deserve their kid-safe badge, but upon contacting kid-safe we get a reply from 55pixels the company that Bin Weevils comprises of themselves, not Kid Safe. Section 5: Statements I have gathered a number of statements from players of the game on their experience with its safety?
“The game’s approach to chat moderation, and securing their virtual world from exploits, inappropriate behaviour and misuse of the game should be a day-to-day job done on a day-to-day basis. However, the behaviour I have seen online has been appalling; it is not an environment that kids should be graced by” – TurboWeevil “Back when I used to play Bin Weevils as a child, all bad behaviour resulted in being banned off the game completely, for the littlest bad word you said.

Nowadays, I not only see the game itself ruined, but the way foul language can be easily said as well. 55Pixels have only focussed on hate aimed towards them and seemed to have ignored the islamophobia and other forms of hate towards communities.” – Monty200 “September 2014, when the database got hacked by two of my friends, I was at the in-game area Flums Fountain as were many others when they were going on various staff accounts and much more. The next morning I woke up to find myself banned because I was ‘associated with the hacking’ when I really was not.
I have had my account hacked twice, once in 2012 and once in 2013, through no fault of my own. I have also had various hate ‘weevils’ made of me and have had people abusing the chat filter to tell me to kill myself (said in-game as ‘sKILL YOURSELF’) and have just in general had a really unpleasant time, the staff are not very welcoming and I don’t feel appreciated as a player of 7 years, which is upsetting as I have seen the good and the bad” – SPIDY “Bin Weevils was BAFTA winning – players were logging in daily to talk to their online friends and the atmosphere was fantastic. As the years went by, the quality dropped.
From this year alone, I have experienced people being bullied and people trying to target me. Accounts with the names ‘skill-username’ and ‘username-glows-cocko’ which as you can see, its quite upsetting to see this on a kids game and quite disturbing at the same time. I know the Bin Weevils team take action however, it does take time and I believe it should be done instantly instead of waiting days, if not weeks.” – User who prefers to remain Anonymous “The safety of players should be paramount on a virtual world aimed at a young audience. However, seeing a large amount of players using intentional spelling errors and the use of capital letters to bypass chat filtering systems in order to aim hate at an individual shouldn’t be tolerated, and we believe that 55Pixels isn’t doing enough to punish and prevent this from happening.” – Tum103 Other pics: Two users simulate ‘virtual sex’ by crouching and rubbing their heads together using the game’s special moves. I really hope you will decide to investigate this danger to children.
